KOREA Trippin' Day 1: Busan [20 Apr] Annyeonghasaeyo!
The day we have been waiting for has finally arrived! We flew to Korea by Cathay Pacific, with a supposed 50 minute stopover in Hong Kong. However, our flight, which was scheduled to depart at 8.15 pm, was delayed by 30 minutes. Which meant we only had 20 minutes to transit in Hong Kong?! Madness :o
It was a good thing we checked in online 2 days prior to our departure, as it saved us much hassle at the airport. We simply just had to drop our luggages at the Self Check-In Bag Drop Counter.
Really glad that we did the online check-in because we were able to select our seats on board (yay for window seats!)
[In-flight food! Beef with mashed potato, not bad]
Upon arrival at Hong Kong International Airport, we rushed for our transit flight with barely anytime to rest. It was like 1am? But at least we made it onto the plane!
[Jo met her primary school friend on board the same plane! Such a small world haha]
After another 4 hours or so, we finally touched down at Incheon International Airport!
[Tired faces from the lack of sleep]
Collected our luggages and proceeded to 7-Eleven to purchase the Seoul Citypass Plus at
The Seoul Citypass Plus card fare is
[Followed the signs to the Airport Railroad (words in distinct yellow)]
There are 2 types of Incheon Airport Railroad Express (AREX) trains -- All-stop train & Non-stop train
What is the difference?
All-stop train
57 min from Incheon Int'l Airport to Seoul Station
+ Comes at more frequent timings
+ Cheaper
- Longer travelling time
Non-stop train
43 min from Incheon Int'l Airport to Seoul Station
+ Much faster
- Comes only at specific timings
- More expensive (
We chose the All-stop train that brought us all the way to Seoul Station.
[On the AREX to Seoul station with our burden luggages]
★ Premium Travel Centre
We decided to drop off our luggages at this company called "Premium Travel Center"
How to get there:
Upon reaching Seoul station, head to level B2F, and you can easily see it on your right.
KR Pass (For foreigners or international students only)
This pass allows you to purchase unlimited KTX tickets at a cheaper rate within the travelling time frame. We recommend that you make your reservation online at the Korail's website, print out the e-tickets and exchange it for a pass at any KTX stations (e.g. Seoul Station, Yongsan)
About 2.5 hours later, we finally arrived at Busan!
★ Jalgachi Fish Market
[Cute couple whom we bought fish from #relationshipgoals]
[The restaurant recommended by the cute couple]
After choosing our live seafood, we proceeded to the 하동집 restaurant on the 2nd floor for lunch. We basically paid for the restaurant to cook for us.

[Live octopus 산낙지]
Overall Experience and Thoughts:
It was truly an eye-opening experience at Korea's largest seafood market. We saw many weird-looking sea creatures, but were obviously too scared to eat them. Walking past the many stalls inside the market, we realised that all the stalls sold pretty much the same type of seafood. It felt kinda intimidating having stall owners shouting incomprehensible Korean words at us as we walked past their stalls, perhaps hoping that we would patronise their store. We eventually settled for a stall run by a friendly-looking couple.
Food wise?
Abalone (전복) - Really fresh and tasted amazing! We requested for it to be barbecued.
Scallops (가리비) - Not bad as well
Live octopus (산낙지) - Probably the weirdest thing we ever ate. Pretty much tasteless, if not for the sesame sauce. Jo really liked it, while the rest of us were not a big fan. "It tastes sweeter as you continue chewing on it" she says.
Sliced raw fish (광어회) - Really fresh. Eat it together with the gochujang (spicy sauce) and it'll taste amazing!
Price wise?
One of our most expensive meals in Korea, but considering the amount we paid for fresh live seafood, it's quite reasonable. The restaurant charges about
How to get there:
Jalgachi Station, Exit 10. Walk about 200m.
[Heading to Oryukdo Skywalk by bus]
[Awesome sea view that you won't find in Seoul]
[Really interesting to see the sea beneath our feet, through the transparent floors]
[Shoe covers to prevent you from dirtying their glass panels but we look Mickey Mouse haha]
[Thankful to be back on the bus after being attacked by series of intense winds]
Overall Experience and Thoughts:
Cold weather (10°C) and strong winds, coupled with the fact that we were totally under-dressed, forbade us from staying too long at Oryukdo. Even so, we enjoyed the view of the splendid sea. It was also pretty cool looking down through the transparent floors to see waves crashing onto the base of the cliff. A good scenic place to take nice photos :)
How to get there:
To get to the bus stop, turn left at exit 10 and walk straight all the way. You will see 2 bus stops.
Take bus 27 and alight at SK 뷰후문 (about 25 stops away). Walk about 275m to reach.
★ Gwangalli Beach
[Gwangan Bridge - Korea's second largest suspension bridge]
Overall Experience and Thoughts:
A pity the pictures we took did not do much justice to the pretty night view at Gwangalli beach. We recommend Gwangalli beach to be visited at night, as you will get to see the lighted up Gwangan bridge and skyline of Busan. A good place for couples to take a romantic stroll while enjoying the pleasant sea breeze. It is also located near many food alleys, which are easily accessible for you to grab a bite after a night walk.
How to get there:
Gwangan Station, Exit 3
Upon exiting the station, turn to the right to see a bank. Follow the signs thereafter.
600m walk.
Lunch: Seafood at Jalgachi MarketDinner: Dwaeji Gukbap
Rating: 2/5
Kinda disappointed with this dish and found the smell of pork too overbearing. However, a bowl of hot rice soup did help to warm us up a little in this chilly weather.
How to get there:
One of the restaurants along the road taken from Gwangan Station to Gwangalli Beach
[Level 1: living room + kitchen. Level 2: bedroom.]
Rating: 3/5
We booked an Airbnb apartment that was close to Haeundae Beach, as it was the first thing on our itinerary the next day. It is also conveniently located near the subway station, the convenience store and the supermarket.
Cosy loft apartment with comfy beds! Generally clean and tidy, except for the dust-filled washing machine!
The wifi could only be used by a maximum of 2 devices at any point in time, so we had to take turns amongst ourselves... Still bearable for 1 night though
We did not meet our host during our short 1-night stay, but he was prompt and friendly in answering our queries :)
Cost?
$104 for 1 night ($26 per person)
How to get there:
Jung-dong Station, Exit 7
The building can be seen upon exiting
Do check out his apartment HERE if you're interested.
After checking into our apartment, we headed to emart to grab some snacks and our breakfast for the next day. The most awesome thing about Korean supermarkets - the generous food samples! They were having some late-night sales too (unleashing the inner kiasu Singaporean). Be sure to check it out if you happen to be there.
And that concludes our Day 1 in Korea! :)
